TNT: The Name's Thom

"These powers, they're just part of you, Thom, but they're not all of you."
-Lila Creed

Although the title is common, I still gave it a shot. After all, do not judge a book by its cover.

Well, basically, the cover page and the title says a lot about the story without so much as reading the synopsis. Try the contents and be amazed at how magnificent the construction of the story was. It had its own twist and turns in this world full of ordinary people, special people, and even extra-terrestrial beings. For those who are looking for a world of heroism with powers and stuff, check this out.

I read comments about this novel in goodreads.com. I agree to some points but I would not totally dump it. Yes, the action took place on the latter half of the book but on the first half, the tension was just building and that's how the author decided to do it. The heroes may somehow be similar to known those we know like the mutants in X-Men and others. In terms of originality in that part, it may have scored low but they were necessary part of the novel to display the events the author had in mind. There were a lot more.

As I was browsing and reading more comments, one thought came to me and this is purely an opinionated thought from my point of view: we don't have to be so critical in literature; we just have to learn to appreciate the story and its lessons. I know, I know. If we don't get critical, how can there be good quality outputs and such all stuff that concerns the world of literature. But it's just that simple if we are looking for a way to pass out time, to get entertained, while still learning at the same time. Once again, this is just my opinion. I'm just saying it as it is. Cheers!

Flipped

The first time I flipped, I was still in kindergarten. It was below a double-deck and because I like to reach the bottom of the upper part while laying, I lifted my feet and tried to make contact. All that happened is an accident. I was small and there was no way yet that I'll achieve my goal. Instead, I went sideways and went straight to the glass of a  furniture.

I do not know if this is a faint memory or just a figment of my imagination. I did not confirm it with my parents but I believe I'm in the real world. Still, how could I say, I have no evidence.

I like the idea of alternate narration in a first person point of view of this novel by Wendelyn Van Draanen. I like the style of starting the flip with the girl and ending the flip with the boy - suggesting that in the end, the guy eventually fell for the girl. I have not been in a relationship yet but I have seen in many movies (yes, poor me, I know) that it takes some time before someone you like return the same likeness. Most of the time, the one that we like likes someone else and they just ignore the way we look at them. Being able to change the way how they feel towards us is an achievement. Also, well, their flip is obviously different from my flip.

Love in the eyes of young people is an interesting story to follow. As they say, love is the universal language and that love can do things you really can't explain. I certainly like the concept as it was portrayed.

I watched the movie and I decided that the book is a lot better. I mean, with all the effort to make this into a motion picture, I give them credit for that. However, I appreciate it more in text because what I felt while reading it was not felt while watching it. Just sharing my thoughts. Cheers!

F.I.R.E.*

I have seen smoke of fire before but not an actual scenario. The big, dark smoke going up the sky that denotes that a tragic incident is happening. That's what caught their attention.

I had no sleep and I was traveling in a van going to school. As we went up a flyover, I heard conversations but didn't know what it was all about. I saw the driver's head turn to the right and so were some other passengers. I got curious and checked it out and saw a building, or a house possibly, on actual fire. It was along the road going to Las Pinas. As the vehicle continued to move, I still looked at the construction being devoured by the huge fire and was shocked to actually witness a big flame go high up from the roof as if something exploded. We could only guess what caused the fire but no one said anything about it, just what the site was, that maybe it was a warehouse. In my mind, one thing is for sure, no one should play fire because that is not a joke. We can never be too careful but just the same. If I were you, I will prepare myself to accept the things that happen to us. We don't have complete control in this lifetime.

LSS*

While I was listening to Idina Menzel's performance of "Let It Go" from the movie "Frozen," I happen to see Lea Salonga's name on the side list of suggestions for viewing on YouTube. I clicked one and amazingly, I got so hooked I searched for more videos of her and since then, I had an LSS - I wanted to watch and listen to her wonderful voice over and over again. It's really wonderful how talented this Filipino artist is; I'm so proud of her. Even other people adore her like this guy who went on stage with Lea. I enjoyed watching this. The happiness they felt went through to me. Read his caption and be captivated by how her simple acts make others happy. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGWC7icTM_E)

For the finale, I want to share this video of Lea performing Defying Gravity. It's so amazing to end the day with this... as well as to end my entry. Apparently, this is also the theme song of my life right now. Mabuhay!

Oral Prophylaxis

Proper hygiene... I do have that. However, for some reasons, I tend to disregard others because of too many responsibilities. Take my teeth for example. There are many times that I fell asleep at night without brushing due to exhaustion. I remember back in high school, a dentist told me that I have great teeth. There are no cavities or decaying parts. Come to think of it. That's a great thing but without proper maintenance, that's useless. With the formation of my teeth at present, brace is highly recommended. Since I cannot afford it yet, let's go for an oral prophylaxis. It's been a while since I had it. Now that I had it again, this serves as a wake up call to take care of my body, as in every part of it. I wish for you guys to do the same.

P. S. I don't remember the process but I was just shocked that it only took fifteen minutes. I'm new to it again. Every corner was cleansed. Then, some kind of toothpaste was applied. Lastly, dental floss was used. I saw how dirty my teeth was every time I rinsed. Well, it feels great to have a clean mouth again. It adds to the confidence to project myself in front of people and to talk about my ideas without shame of bad breath. Cheers to that!

Then and Now

Old Betty: Wow! What's happened to you? I mean you've changed. I barely even recognize you...
Present Betty: Look, I have not changed...
...
Betty: Christina, have I changed...?
Christina: Well, I think it's hard not to change. I don't know. It's this place, it does something to you.

My college friends have told me at random times that I have changed... not just once. What are the odds of this circumstance? I mean, for me to watch this particular episode (Season 2 Episode 08) on my special day plus the fact that in the series, Christmas is also approaching. Welcome to our world.

Somehow, I've been known as a nerd, a weird, but not yet called a geek. What's the difference? They are almost similar if not exactly the same. The bottomline: others see me as the smart guy.

If I try to go back and look at how I was then, I cannot say for sure that I have changed now. I see some glimpse of some small changes but it's quite difficult to measure it unless I have someone who was with me from high school to college to differentiate me then and now. Situation varies and adaptation is necessary. After all, we have to get out of our box and comfort zone as we grow up. We won't be certain of what's ahead of us in the real world. It can either be fancy or cruel, ideal or messy; we can expect but we are not sure if our expectations will be met. At this times that things are going so fast, staying in one place might just be the last option.

Two days prior to this day, God wants me to know (via Facebook) that...

"Today we believe God wants us to know that ...
it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks.
People are always judging each other and, the truth is, they're not very good at it. Don't put a lot of concern into what people think of you. You weren't created to please and entertain everyone. You were created to be you, so feel good about yourself."

This is a great thing to know and it is true. We cannot please everybody but aren't we living to please God Almighty alone? Well, happy 20th birthday to me and I wish everyone an advance Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. To God be the glory!

"Hey, growing up, doesn't matter what you do for a living. There are always going to have tough choices to make... I really think you can stay here and still be the person you want to be."

The Snow Queen*

After a long time, I was able to enter a cinema again. It was delighting because we needed to unwind. The moment was right because the preliminary exams are over. We did not really know what movie to watch but as it turned out, we did not regret choosing Frozen.

This 2013 animated film is beautiful as it talks about love all over again. "An act of true love" can make anything possible. Yes, the topic love is now so common with almost everything already used for a concept. However, isn't it amazing to talk about it again to remind us of what it is?

This royal family has an eldest daughter that has magic. It can either be a curse or a blessing depending on how Elsa will use it. She has to learn how to control it to be able to call it a blessing. If things get out of hand, it obviously becomes a curse. Her emotion greatly affects it. In real life, anything we have is basically on our hands. I mean, how to use them in our lives is our decisions. It just boils down to how we see things because of our preference.

The family protected her secret even to her younger sister Anna. Anna used to know Elsa's magic and they used to be close but due to an accident, her memory was altered and eventually, they grew apart.

Many times, people think that others are better off without us - ignoring the fact that there are people who loves us enough to chase us and bring us back home. When Elsa was of age, she inherited the throne of the kingdom because when they were still young, their parents died in an accident. During the coronation night, as the gates were opened, people witnessed this magic she possess and became afraid of her. The same can be said with her so she ran away. Apparently, she wasn't able to control it. She did not want to hurt others so she built her own palace on the mountain.

To cut things short, one thing that I like the most from this movie is that we have to love ourselves in order to love others. When Elsa went far enough, I was moved by how she was able to accept herself. At the end of this entry, a video clip of this particular portion is available for viewing. I want to share it so watch it when you're free. Since the others know it already, and she's on her own, she relieved herself from despair by seeing the beauty of her magic. To her alone, it is a blessing because she is certain that she won't hurt herself. However, with others' existence around, she cannot control it because of her worrying.

So, after loving yourself, you can finally love others. Love is the key. In the end, she realized that it was the only answer to everything. She got her sister back and at the same time, she learned how to control her magic and restored the kingdom's peace. "An act of true love" solved their problems.

To end this, I would also like to share that Olaf is remembered, the funny and optimistic snowman, as well as Sven, the reindeer of Kristoff that acts like man's bestfriend.

Taken for Granted

"...Gave you all I had
And you tossed it in the trash
You tossed it in the trash, you did..."
-Bruno Mars, Grenade

On one event that we had, one of the many things that I picked up from the speakers is the thought that we should surround ourselves with people who will lift us up, not bring us down. So, imagine a life like that. Isn't it amazing, a great feeling to know that you are supported? Apparently, it won't happen all the time.

In relation to the quotes you see at the beginning and at the end of this entry, this is how I feel at the moment. This entry is also related to an entry I had last month. I cannot conclude that they will do the same things I do for them but definitely this is true for me. Unless they prove to me that what I'm thinking is wrong, then, that would be a lot better.

"...I put you high up in the sky
And now, you're not coming down.
It slowly turned, you let me burn
And now, we're ashes on the ground..."
-Miley Cyrus, Wrecking Ball

For the Win!

Friend 1: Congrats! Nanalo ka pala ng 5k sa Biogesic. Libre na!!!! ;)
Friend 2: Men panalo ka ng 5k! Stig.

These were two text messages that I received yesterday, the day Biogesic posted the lucky winner in their Facebook page.

Three of my friends are groupmates and they were representing LPU in Biogesic Ingat ng Damang-Dama Sineserye. At first, there were lots of schools competing, but only five were chosen to advance. Thankfully, LPU was included.

In able to get the People's Choice Award, online voting was instigated and of course, the entry with the most number of votes gets the award. One lucky voter will also get a chance to win five thousand pesos. They did not get the Peole's Choice Award and they were only declared 3rd Place. However, no matter what, they are still my champion. I supported them so much that guess what? I also won. This was for them; this was for the win!

When I got those messages, I was uncertain if this was for real. I confirmed it when my friends, who were preparing for the awards night, called to congratulate me. I also went online and saw posts tagged to me with my name on Biogesic poster online. It sure was for real.

P.S. Everytime someone congratulates me, I thank them adding "I still can’t believe it."

Advancing Technology

Advancing technology has touched the field of print media bringing in what is called as ebook.

I must tell you, I downloaded a lot of them before, but as I have mentioned in an old entry, I had a hard time reading on monitor. Then, recently, I found myself downloading again. In the past, I downloaded a lot for safekeeping and somehow, it did not work out so I avoided them. A long time has passed since I've collected and read. So, why not try again, right?

My interest in ebooks sparked again because I saw this Jack the Ripper book and had a battle with myself. I like the book, it is cheap, but should I really buy it? I searched the web and was amazed to find an ebook version. With that, I had to decide whether I'm going to grab the hard copy or go for the free one. I made my decision and I chose to get the softcopy.

I finally found their usefulness. I finally learned their value so I’m now making use of them. Hey, I have to say, it pretty much saves a lot of money. I weigh from time to time if I actually want to have a hard copy of a particular title and if I answer no, then, I choose the ebook and I can save money for another one that I find interesting. After all, I only have to invest in time (to look for titles and download them) and electricity (of my computer in searching and of my gadget used for reading).

Learning that National Bookstore is also promoting ebook, I did my research and learned that they made a partnership with Kobo for people to have options. At first, I had doubts how the print media will survive nowadays. Thinking deep enough, I believe that with the new technologies that are arising, print will not vanish, As someone from NBS stated, they are still the National Bookstore. They said that all they wanted was to provide choices for their customers and it is good. In the end, it is still about reading. Their business benefits from the alliance, but the main topic and goal is providing reading materials, things that entertains us or educates us, or both. Read on!

Play Dead

This guy knows how to play dead for real. Ashton Holmes played roles that are key persons but then die on the latter part of the story. I don’t know what is with him but the roles he auditioned for seems to have death sentence on them. They ended up badly even though the characters were good guys.

The first time I saw him was in Nikita Season 1, a series about a former agent who went rogue from a dirty branch of government that trained but she wants to destroy. I saw him the second time on Wind Chill wherein someone's past doesn't want to stay past so it haunted this guy and gal who were on their way home for holidays. The third time was in The Divide, a story about survivors stuck in a basement of a building because of nuclear attack.

This entry is just a feature composition that I wanted to share because I noticed this little detail. Until next time. Cheers!

I Know...

I have high respect for people who have different belief. I know that at this point of time, people are celebrating something that varies from one religion to the other. I know it, trust me. I know that what we will be visiting are just remains. I am not giving importance to what’s left physically stored in boxes, but it was my personal decision to continue my visit because I want to spend some time to remember them. How often do I do that? Guess what? I got more. I was able to meet the others and bond. I was tired but I am contented. It wasn’t a waste of time.

Acceptance

"I really was trying to make it work. In my own way... I guess. It's time to face reality."
-Dexter Morgan

"Akala ko kasi makakatulong ako sa inyong lahat e... Na-realize ko hindi ko pala kayo kayang tulungan lahat. I can try pero dapat tulungan nyo rin sarili nyo. Pumalpak yung tulong ko e. May kanya-kanya kayong problema. Sorry ha?"
-Nathan Matriponio, First Day High

I have learned to accept everything about them and everything that has happened. I am proud to say that I have finally moved on.

I tried... I really tried. With all the problems that we encountered, I presented solutions that I knew would work out but in the end, it didn't. I know I have to be considerate as someone who is in charge of the group. However, I didn't have a choice anymore. The "understanding" grace period was way beyond the limit. I had to become straight forward - I had to be strict. I had to do it even though I'm not that kind of person and even though I knew that some of my actions were wrong. What else can I do? I gave everything I have and I sacrificed a lot and what did I get and feel in return? That it was all wasted. Maybe, just maybe, doing something opposite, say reverse psychology, would make a difference. Unfortunately, nothing good came out of it and still, nothing changed.

You know, we talked many times, as in every after class, and I believe it is the one positive result of this dilemma. I'm fine with it because we communicate and I became more open. We actually understand each other but definitely, our actions didn't prove it. So, there is one last option left, I have to meet them half way - I had to step down.

Now, there is no point in becoming angry or expressing my disappointment. I learned in the past that they are exactly what will happen over and over again. Well, I surrendered already so I am going to live my life and just see this through until it ends.

You can't say I didn't care because all I did was care.

"Nice guys have the toughest jobs, Nathan."
-Investigator Matriponio

The Bay Harbor Butcher*

"I was filled with dread at the thought that my mind had skipped town
and left me behind to pay the rent."

...and I'm done! Reading this book until the last page was very entertaining. I am interested with Dexter's character and so, I was interested to find how things will go for him. I also would like to add that along the way, he provided thoughts that are funny for me. There's no question that I'll continue reading.

That's it for now. What can I do? I don't know what else to say because until now, I am fascinated by the story that it left me speechless. Well, until the next entry. Cheers!

"I was completely unable to fling my giant brain at the problem
and catch a solution as it bounced back.
The mind picks some very bad times to take a walk, doesn't it?"

The Big Shift

I am caught by the surprise that my interest went from novels to other reading materials by just a blink. Nevertheless, I think this big shift is a great thing.

I have a lot of novels that are on "bench" because I'm on the process of collecting books but has not enough time to read them. I don't regret that. I do that to those books that I've looked for so long, those that I do not want to let go of. At least, I already have them and come the time that I'm available, I can easily reach and grab them and start right away. Suddenly, my interest went to official movie companion, mass communication, art, comics, self development, and magazines among others.

As of now, they are starting to compile on my bookshelves and I like the idea because change is good from time to time. Cheers! :))

Still the Best Policy

As my brother leaves for a job interview, my mother reminded him of some pointers while at it. Hearing her words, it came to my mind the famous saying that "honesty is the best policy."

In my case, I only care a little of what the result will become for as long as I know that what I did was necessary, that I was true to myself.

During my third year college in second semester, a professor in one of my class told us, (actually, it was directed to me for even though it is a group work, my name, face, and fingerprints are all over my work; very distinct to trace it back to me) not to narrate, to just give what we have. In my work's context, it simply means don't be so honest.

In my defense, I don't regret it because I learned what I need to learn. I know how and when to be professional. I didn't regret taking the risk. My grade somehow got affected by it but I know being honest will get me way far ahead in the long run than what was said.

Honesty's result can be proved in the same timeline in another subject. The professor even said, "It's good that you're honest. At least I know."

See the difference?

This is different in my mentality that when someone borrows something from me, I tell them I don't have it. Why? It's because what's the difference if I tell you I have and then I won't lend it to you? The reason for this is I am very careful of my things and sad to say, I stereotype to all that however neat it maybe when I give it to them, the truth is it will not always return the same way and it hurts me a lot because for the long time that I had it with me, it never occurred to me to damage it and that's just what others will do.

The bottomline? It's still a case to case basis. What I'm trying to say is be honest in things that really matter. Take a risk, but not over the relationship that you've already built with them. Weigh things because most often than not, honesty is STILL the best policy.

Dexter

Garrett: You don’t have a dark side.
Theresa: Sure I do. Everyone does.
It’s just that when you’re around, it
likes to keep itself hidden.
-excerpt from "Message in the Bottle"
by Nicholas Sparks

This is totally awesome. I love the character; it is very brilliant.

A friend of mine once said that it is brutal, but I find it very, very interesting now that I've already watched it. Okay, I admit it - tt is sort of brutal, but I don't mind it at all. In some ways, I am similar to him but I tell you for sure that I do not drive a dark passenger.

I came to view this story in series because of my brother and now that I want it, I downloaded eBooks to find out how it was first written and I discovered that its structure is equally magnificent. It is a poetic narration from a first person point-of-view as another friend described it and I agree with that.

Now, in relation to the aforementioned conversation from another book, it is reflected in the character of Dexter, a "very neat monster" as Jeffry Lindsay puts it in his book series in which the first one was entitled "Darkly Dreaming Dexter." I will create a separate entry once I finish reading it.

Though the story is bloody, a lot of lessons can be truly learned. Even those that you already know will be better realized and reinforced.

Viewer discretion is still advise because definitely, its content is for mature audience.

BG MSC* of Our Lives

How do we compare the music then and now?

It cannot be denied that in other countries, US most specially, music has far greater development now in contrast to before and in our country.

Music helps us cope up with any problems in life because as simple as listening to them, we can relate to the lyrics. Whatever mood we are in at the moment, we somehow choose the music that goes along with it - something we can call background music of our lives. It greatly affects us, or me for this matter. On the point of view of listeners or audiences, it provides inspiration. On the point of view of the artist, they profit, promote the industry, and express themselves all at the same time.

If music before relay messages that people want to convey, they do more nowadays because people tend to be liberal because it is in their culture. They tell more stories about sex as what I have noticed, a bit worse and worrisome because the topic is not pleasant to the minds of the young people.

We have a lot of variation to choose from (genres as we call them) but as users of this kind of media, we still have to be careful.

"...Music makes the people come together..."
-Madonna

Hear Me Out

Yesterday, I finally had the chance to have a proper consultation. I really didn't expect to feel light after the conversation and that's what happened because I've been talking about the same thing with other people. The good thing here is that people listen and I gained different kinds of advice  I hope this dilemma can be solved as soon as possible so that I can go on again normally.

Remind Me (3)

"Money is a bitch for bringing the worst out of people,
especially when they've got an addiction to feed."
-"Saturday's Child" by Ray Banks

I am not a b****, but I know how money greatly affects the behavior of a person. Still, I am also not that kind of person. I have my savings. Nonetheless, I have a different kind of addiction.

For someone who is intellectually inclined, who excels more in academics over sports, I am like anybody else, I have a habit of collecting items - preferably books.

I can say that I've "got an addiction to feed" because I have this impulse to buy books that I like when I see them most especially if they are rare or hard to find. There are so many interesting books out there. Let's just say that I prefer books of some unknown authors. What I do is even though I still have a lot of pending books to read, I like to keep what I find right away. It's like I want an assurance that I have it with me than regret losing it the moment I come back to where it is located in a bookstore.

With that, I have to promise myself that I have to control and contain it because presently, we have a problem financially and as a graduating student, there are lots of expenses and I have to invest on that. Books can wait in their shelves; my future cannot.

I, Eric Pastor, do hereby solemnly promise to avoid as much as possible, to the best of my ability, the call to purchase books, either with friends or family or with myself alone; to focus more on the important things that involve my future and my family's welfare; to understand that my collection can wait. Please remind me. Thank you.

Remind Me (2)

I have something to tell you...

Since I was young, I always had a problem with my tonsil. A simple milk can spoil the moment, a small candy can make a bitter-sweet revenge, a cold drink can make the situation hot. What I'm saying is I have a sensitive tonsil to easily catch tonsilitis.

After a reflection that I always break my promises to myself because of being sick again of cough and cold for two weeks, two weeks of misery, I came to a conclusion that I need to put it in a writing to be effective. Hence, this contract. Please don't hesitate to bother and remind me of this thing. Thank you.

I, Eric Pastor, do hereby solemnly promise to stay away from any kind of sweet foods, allowing me to only eat biscuits, e.g. Magic Flakes (Cheese), Bread Stix, Eggnog, Graham (Honey), Skyflakes, One One and the likes; to stay away from sodas, e.g. sarsi, sprite, sparkle, mirinda, among others; and to avoid anything cold or with ice, a combination of the previous mentioned, e.g. ice cream, cake, etc. because health is wealth; hence I have to take good care of myself for there’s this chance that every time I get sick, some seconds or minutes tick away even though I don’t drink or smoke. Please remind me. Thank you.

Depleting Species

(First published on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2008 through a class blog project.)

Species are endangered today around the world due to the effects of human activities.

The only permanent in this world is change. Meaning to say, the things we want most and need could only be acquired when time gives it to us, and even unwanted things. Time could also get, whether you like it or not, some things you should loose and let go off by a moment. These things have the ability to change human life style and the world.

The idea is that the world is changing as time pass by. I should tell you that at this very moment, some animals are already extinct and the reason why this continues to happen is because of abusive human activities.

It is very sad to say that animals of some type are slowly vanishing and yet there are no discoveries of other new species. So as a living thing, why don’t you help conserve these animals that we could also call as “treasures of the earth”? They do have the right to live in peace because they share a part in this world. They supply our needs in terms of food (e.g. milk of cow), protection (like of dogs that guard our houses), and so many more. Always remember the earth is not for us only.

Even you are only one, your care for animals count for if we combine altogether, we can win against the people intentionally harming this world and those who are illegally doing activities like illegal loggers on the first place that cut young trees instead of old ones that results to the loss of their habitat called deforestation. Think about it before it's too late and before time runs out.

“The nature has given man one tongue and two ears, that we may hear twice more than we speak.”
-Epictetus

********** NOTHING FOLLOWS **********

P.S.

As I was editing and updating my blog interface, I suddenly remembered that the first time I had a blog is in high school. Though I was just a contributor back then, I am still fascinated by what we've accomplished as a class. It was an achievement. Now, I am maintaining my own. I still like to remember our output so I decided to put a link at the bottom of my page.

Also, as I read my entry again, I somehow got confused. I can’t believe that I write this way back then. Nonetheless, I hope that whoever reads this gets my message.

AB3: .hack// Another Birth (vol. 1//INFECTION)

Akira, who hates role-playing games, still enters an online fantasy game called The World to be able to discover the mystery to save her younger brother who lost consciousness while playing.

It cannot be denied that the young generation today is hooked with these kinds of online games. Parents can describe this as a different kind of addiction - an addiction because kids choose it over study, over meal, or even over sleep. Even though they are just in front of a computer, they communicate with other players who are playing at the same time as they are.

Internet, which is considered as the new media, takes over all forms of media that we know of. Somewhat, it can be identified as a package or all-in-one. While others preserve the traditional media, this new media still has negative effects just like the others. In social media, cyber-bullying exist and identity theft. For gaming, it is like the new gadgets that comes out because people can already play just by sitting down, unlike before wherein you call your friends to play activities that involves one’s presence physically like tumbang preso, patintero, sekyu-base, piko, mataya-taya, and others.

.hack// Another Birth is a series that calls our attention to remind us of the thought that “too much of something is bad.”

AB2: PLEASE DON’T COME BACK FROM THE MOON

This is a story about Michael Smolij who lives in a neighborhood wherein fathers just left one day leaving a note that they went to the moon. He was just a teenager at that time and guess what? He hated his father for what he did. Father figure is important while a child is growing up.

He doesn’t like it but he has to move on. When he was asked by his mother what did he like to he answered, “A writer, I guess.” and thought it had just occurred to me, but suddenly it sounded right. It was what I wanted to do.

He pretty much knew what he was doing even though sometimes he feels lost, doing adult stuff even at a young age. Nonetheless, he knew what the basic principle is when you are in a radio station: “Dead air was the mortal sin of radio broadcast.”

He is a smart kid. Though he did some bad things in his youth, drinking and other vices, he grew up to be a man and became a father to his family. He did not leave his town because inspite of all, there is still happiness in Maple Rock.

AB1: MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

Nicholas Sparks is known for his spectacular works about love. His third book is entitled "Message in a Bottle."

The story runs around Theresa Osborne, a divorced woman with a son. One day, as she was spending time alone in a beach, she found a bottle washed ashore. In it, she discovered a letter written by Garrett Blake, a man who lost the love of his life in an accident.

Theresa is a writer for Boston Times. One idea of this profession (journalist) that pretty much applies to the real world is the concept of "Her years as a reporter had taught her to take nothing for granted, to make a plan, and to do her best for anything." Another thing that can be used from the story is the importance of one language skill, also a tool of communication, i.e. writing.

Sparks believes in the lasting power of love and in this story, the characters were connected through the letters. This one had a special twist in it – it used bottled messages – to give more value to its worth, to make it more special.

Before technology advanced as they are nowadays, there was just snail mail. However slow it may be, as long as the message was sent, it was all that matters. These kinds of letters can be kept and their importance will never fade because they will always contain the feelings and message being expressed, as well as the effort dedicated to accomplish the output. This kind of story wants us to once again appreciate the worth of letters.

“The immediacy, accessibility, and simplicity of pen and paper are indispensible.”

Annotated Bibliography Special Series

Media Studies is a good subject for media practitioners to take because it analyzes all possible tools of communication and how they are utilized in different forms every day. Knowing that each one is powerful in their own ways alone, what more if they are combined with the others? Furthermore, a lot of stories can be derived from them in film, advertisement, print, and the likes.

Print, the focus of this entry, specifically books, is a product of the need to communicate and relay messages or lessons – be it non-fiction or fiction. Academic books, for example, educate by discussing different topics that are applicable in real life. Fantasy on the hand, entertains by revealing a story that narrates the life of the character. This is just one genre. Fiction has different genres that an individual can choose from depending on his interest. In this kind of print, authors use a combination of various communication tools because it can the profession of the protagonist or s/he uses them for any reason (it cannot be denied that anyone uses at least one form anytime and anywhere).

This series will talk about three fiction novels.

TVC*: Television Change

What do you think are the changes and challenges of television?

Since its beginning, television in the Philippines has changed a lot. Many challenges came but it helped in the development. However, as a student of mass communication who became media literate who have been studying this particular medium for quite some time now, it improved not entirely for the greater good.

Listening to the group reporter's discussion, the main reason for its acquisition is to channel educational programs. Television really has a great power in influencing; it has great potential if it is maximized to its full capabilities. Nowadays, yes, it still does educate, but it's more on the business sector. Networks give audience what they want, not entirely what they need. That much I know is the result of change as time pass by. It just can't be denied that it really became beautiful as technology became more advanced.

Presently, we have to be careful in using different kinds of mediums. We have to remember that "we use it," not "it uses us."

Dear Reader

I was not born as a writer - that’s what I believe. I became a writer because I became interested in it and I went through years of training as I grow up. On a physical aspect, many people tell me that I have a beautiful penmanship using cursive writing. But really, I like writing to express myself. Without further ado, I would like to present my answer to one question in an exam in Media Studies. I hope the people will learn again to appreciate this simple form of communication and a form of art.

What field of media is used in the movie as an interest of the main character? Explain.

Among the different mediums available nowadays, in the movie “Boy,” the field of media used is creative writing. It is the interest of the main character that helped in getting the story going because he expresses himself through literary pieces, specifically through poetry. Words, when used beautifully to create a piece, relay a wonderful message that is the power of writing. The main character did not stop doing what he likes most – his passion. What he did also added flavour to the creative execution of the story because it used figures of speech and it was used to end the movie and present the tile.

Which comes first, L or M?

In today's learning environment, what is more important,
LEARNING or MORALITY?

In today's learning environment, I believe that learning and morality are equally important. However, if it is really mandatory to choose only one, I would pick learning. Learning is a process of acquiring knowledge, both basic and advanced, and it is also through learning that morality can be developed. There would be times that people are moral but was not properly educated, but I think it is better to understand it by starting in the beginning and taking the first step.

Just to add, the idea of what is right or wrong sometimes depend on the value and character of a person. What may be right to one may be wrong to the other. That's why in some movies or films, it is depicted that people experiencing poverty point out to other people that they may not be educated but they know what is right. So, morality is important. But I will still stand on choosing learning even though I don't so much trust education in the Philippines yet, hoping that one day it will be better.

Push Your Luck?

Playing again in an amusement park after quite some time proved to me that it reflects the reality. Yesterday was a random Monday night out with friends. These are the following lessons I gained:

1. Bingo - I've learned in my class under Sir David Nye that I have no luck in gambling. It is a fact at times for at least there are still moments that I get lucky. This tells us that we should not take chances in the present because it can affect our future. We should plan ahead.

2. Arcade - Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. In the end, it depends on your performance. Hence, in reality, if you want to keep winning, strive harder.

3. Racing - I was the first in the beginning but I wasn't able to maintain it. I ended up as the last racer. There are times that I won't always be on the top. Therefore, if you want to keep leading, focus and be consistent.

So, do you still want to push your luck? The choice is yours.

Remind Me (1)

I, Eric Pastor, a current LPU Manila graduating student, taking up AB Mass Communication with specialization in Broadcast Communication, because of my journalism background in high school newspaper, do hereby solemnly promise and write this document to take an oath to fully commit to the field I chose, by balancing my academics, extra-curricular activities, and outside and social life using my elective “Media Studies” by watching television at least 30 minutes a day or 1 hour if possible; by reading news either printed or online whenever I have vacant time, when in school library, or when visiting social media site or surfing the net; by analyzing commercials and billboards or any form of advertisement and taking note of details; by listening to radio, both FM and AM, as much as possible while travelling (through phone or stereo) or at home during weekends and rest days; allowing anyone who reads this to bother me and remind me of my duties and responsibilities and whenever I read this again, it shall serve it purpose to prove that I shall abide to this agreement to ensure my success by achieving my goal.

Media Autobiography

At one point in my life, I believe some people will question why I am here. I wrote this for people to know my answer. To be honest, I did not or was not able make it a habit to read newspaper and watch television daily even though Broadcast Communication is the field that I chose. I can really say that it is one of my weaknesses.

It is very ironic for me to be a writer of our school paper back in high school if from that moment up until now I do not read newspaper consistently. Journalism was my basis to take this course yet, why did I also choose this field if I do not watch television on a regular basis? At present, I am thankful that I have gone this far but I am really bothered because I do not make myself updated of the latest events from time to time; it is only random. I know it will hit me one day without knowing.

Why do I choose international films over local? If we talk about local, why am I more interested in independent films over commercial? In advertising, what makes me choose a product if no commercial convinces me? In the internet, where anything or everything is available, why do I only open and access it to socialize through Facebook or Twitter?

Even though most are automated nowadays, I do not choose to visit sites that are necessary in my life like the online version of newspapers. Being busy with academic subjects and extra-curricular activities has factor why I am like this. To temporarily solve the concern, I maximize my academics... I use them as a tool to get to know everything, to be at least updated at a certain period of time. If asked what my long term solution is, I really think that I have to write a contract myself to remind me that I have to do this because this is what I chose to become, I committed myself to this. Hence, I finally wrote one. Thanks to Media Studies.

Yes, I Am

“...our job wasn’t to argue voters into supporting Stein, it was to provide them with information they needed to make the right choice...”

This book written by David Levithan is something that is unique for it is the first book I have read that really underlined the words that need emphasis. I like the idea because similar is done when you are making a script in a production and you want to do the same.

“We will not be moved.
We will not be moved.
We will not be moved.”

I was able to relate to it because it talks about politics. At present, I am actively participating in school politics. You really have to stand in everything you believe and fight for what is right. Though it is small in nature, it was a start, a stepping stone for me to care enough in the national politics now that I am a registered voter and now that another election is coming near.

“We all are a part of history.”

I also like the idea that it talks about change, something that my party and I are pursuing for. It has already started, actually, and we will make it continuous and constant. I am happy that I am a part of it.

Though the story is about politics, it also talks about all kinds of relationship: divine, family, friends, same sex, opposite sex. It’s about faith, love, and friendship.

This is actually the first David’s known book that I have read and I encountered it because of sale, from Php305 to Php40. I don’t know his distinct writing style yet, but it is evident that his genre is love. The first book that I've been searching for so long that I haven’t found yet is entitled “Are We There Yet” but it seems out of stock all the time.

Anyway, I think you would not believe that he also has written something for children. I don’t know if it is his very first product that I did not know exists but nonetheless, it is good and that would be my next entry.

“’Change,’ they sung, ‘it comes eventually.’”

The Power of Silence

Who ever said that silent people do not make difference? Think twice. You do not know the power of introverts.

However, this entry is not about that. This is written to express the appreciation for the 2012 movie "A Thousand Words." The concept is very good because it makes the viewers realize every action that they have made. It makes them think that what they do affects the people around them most especially the people they value, that once they have done something wrong, they have to make up for it. Nothing is ever too late. The main point is that you've tried no matter what.

But I believe that at the end of the day, it is a case to case basis. The movie is moving, yes, but in real life, it applies to certain situations. I am not going to go about it in detail, but not everyone talks a lot to make their point.

I am one of those people who keeps silent because I know what I should do; I am conscious of my behavior. I may not know better sometimes, but I know what I am doing. I do the things I do because I have reasons. There are times that my actions are misinterpreted, but know that it is for others, not for myself.

As I've always noticed, comedy is still a powerful way to make someone cry while watching. The sudden change of mood is effective. As the story goes, with the help of musical scoring, the goal will be achieved afterwards because the idea was passed along. Like the game I used to play, "I got the message."

So, it is good if a person is outspoken, knows how to express himself all the time. However, do not ignore the fact that there will be also people in your life that is quiet. He may not always react or express his feelings, but you may not know that behind the camera, he does all the works. I don't know if I made my point clear, if the message was sent clearly, but one day, I want to make you understand the power of silence.

Proud Volunteer

"...I felll in love with the eyes looking at me, and the smiles. I think charity work is the most seductive thing in the world, and I've never done it before. For the first time, in your life you're surrounded by people who tell you you're making a difference..."

-Olivia Weston,
Trash by Andy Mulligan

I was surprised to learn that I was a "Volunteer of the Year Awardee." But at that moment I read that text message, that private facebook chat, I thought that whatever the result will be on the election, win or lose, I am still a winner.

I was only exposed to outreach programs this third year in college. I did not expect that in my first year of service, I will already have recognition. And now, I got two. Thanks be to God.

This will also serve as my inspiration to serve other people. I'll continue my service because as I give a hand, I touch a heart, and I save a life. I AM A PROUD VOLNTEER.

Service. Commitment. Change is the Movement.

Galo's Journal

"I'm not going there to die.
I'm going to find out if I'm really alive."
-Spike Spiegel

I bought this book because I wanted to find out if this is really scary. I like reading and I am the type of person who does not scare that easily (except for dogs!) so I finished the book a while ago.

I like to commend Mr. Bob Ong for publishing a good book again. I was entertained. Thumbs up. Without a synopsis at the back, one would really wonder what the story is about, most especially with this picture:

The presentation is magnificent. I believe now is the only time that I read a book that is like a journal. And like in reality, if someone found a journal and read it, he or she will continue to read it until the end (with all due respect). Just like in 'The Vampire Diaries' when Elena was studying the past of Stefan.

For those who know 'Granny' by Anthony Horowitz, this is more serious. If that is light and comedic, well, this is different. It presents more ideas that reflect the reality of life. And I also like how the author delivered the story. It is pretty much like how a teenager from our generation [even though the setting is in the 1990's] would really react. Hehehe... XD

Nothing is extraordinary in the beginning. One more thing, the names of the characters are presented as the journal entries go along the way. Something worth waiting for. The thrill will be in the middle until the end. If I relate myself in the characters, I am best portrayed by Gilbert's mom because we don't scare easily. Anyway, it has little effect on me because as I imagine each scenario, yes, it gives me goosebumps and they are creepy but only for a short period of time. I admit that I don't scare easily, but I am not so strong at all. But yes, I can be your last man standing. :P

If it scared other people, I believe it was effective Mr. Ong. And to end this entry, I would just like to share my favorite quote of them all: "...mga tao mismo ang pumapatay sa sarili nila sa uri ng pinili nilang pang-araw-araw na pamumuhay..."

You Fixed My Cup

“How many do you see...? Look at me. You’re focusing on the problem. If you focus on the problem, you can’t see the solution. Never focus on the problem. Look at me... Let’s see what no one else sees. See what everyone else chooses not to see... See the whole world anew each day...”

As an avid film viewer, I really love to watch movies. Whatever genre it may be, it’s fine, but of course, horror, suspense, thriller, or mystery is preferred.

One of my favourite movies is ‘Patch Adams’ starring Robin Williams. It is based on a true story that is really inspiring and touches comedy. It is inspirational simply because the main character never gave up in life. Though some of the turn of events in his life is tragic, he still stood up after falling.

Patch is the type of person who tries to please everyone. The saying “you cannot please everyone” is well-known, but this 1999 film and his story is different. Aspiring to be a doctor, he really wanted to make a deeper connection and relationship with his patients. Some people did not like him. He just ignored it and just continued and didn’t stop.

For people looking for some humour, this is suggested. At the same time, be inspired. It hits two birds with one stone.

P.S. If I just may add, the first time I watched this film was back in high school in Technical Arts subject. So, you may wonder, what’s the relevance? Well, our teacher bid farewell because he will teach in another school. This is his parting message.

How many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

So make an attempt to grow further... Why shouldn’t we try it again?

OUR ATTEMPT MAY FAIL, BUT NEVER FAIL TO MAKE AN ATTEMPT.

I hope that this movie would inspire you in achieving your goals in LIFE.

As long as you have the DETERMINATION and COURAGE, YOU can achieve what you want...

God Bless and Good Luck to your next JOURNEY...

I hope that you won’t forget ME as your TEACHER.

I will miss YOU.

"Pick It Up and Keep it Hidden"

“If you come to the Philippines, do what Olivia did.
See everything, and fall in love.”
-Andy Mulligan

The first time I saw this book, I got amazed; I got attracted. Though I did not buy it right away, I am thankful that at the time I’ve waited to save money, the next time I came back, it was on sale. From the price of Php299, it went down to Php30.

I liked the book. Reading the synopsis, I got more interested. Even though I don’t read it, I still like the book. Why? Because I like stories like this... stories of poverty. I am saying that coming from an average family, and yet knows what it is like to be one.

Believe it or not, I have already experienced being a “basurero.” I want to use the Filipino word itself because I don’t want you to go astray from my point if I use the word “garbage collector.” It may mean the same thing, but the real essence will be felt if it remains that way.

I started being one in January 2008 and ended up that career four years later, in 2012. I still remember the month because that time, I was in second year of high school. Then unconsciously, I stopped being one. Maybe because I am already in college and there are lots of things to do, lots of requirements.

Let me tell you that I know the feeling of joy for doing the things that they do. I know my joy is far from the real joy that they experience because it is their real life and I have another one, but I am proud to say that it is fun being one. There is nothing to be ashamed of because what they are doing is decent. And I know that they also have dreams but in reality, it would really be hard for them. I'm not degrading them. Come to think of it. Notice that they are happier than those living a good life. They may have lots of problems, but they still have fun.

“Samantalang sila ang mga walang pera, pero buhay na buhay ang bayanihan.”
–Bob Ong, Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan

From a point of view of someone who has an average capability in getting desires and needs, in my opinion, no one will try to experience what these people are doing. For me, I did not regret being one. I lived my life from recycling all the things that I can recycle so I know how to relate to those people.

I am impressed, Andy Mulligan. You are not a Filipino and yet you, someone who is from another country, “has written a powerful story about unthinkable poverty- and the kind of hope and determination that can transcend it.” The story may be fictional, but the fact that the idea was formulated when you were in Manila gives an impression that you were touched. Afterwards, you did not hesitate to write a story inspired by it. I thank you for giving your attention to the Philippines and I hope that after publishing this book, you can also help by taking the next step. God bless. :))

When I walk around the shanties, I see the babies,
and I am always asked to hold them.
And while we're smiling and laughing,
I am thinking, in the back of my mind:
This tiny child – as soon as it can crawl,
it will be crawling through trash."
 -Father Juilliard
